Pink

My character often wonders why I am expected to feel my dignity or why I am supposed to be ashamed of those attributes with which I am born! Have I done anything to be born as a woman, a Hindu, a Muslim or an Indian at the end? But then there are my choices I have made with my own understanding and lived the life span. That is mine only and if I am evaluated or judged, let those be the ones.

Seeing is believing is selected writings on cinema by Chidananda Das Gupta who addresses history of cinema in our country, phase of politics  and especially portrayal of women, sex and violence. I have gone through the half of the book.  Women portrayed in the book somehow arouse the hidden spark every woman has within and so the place of women in the eyes of the society has not changed.

First I am in a state of destitution and wish to correct those who believe that the film can be classified or considered as a feminist film. This film does not celebrate woman spirit, rather it shows again gender differences and suffering of women in view of male patriarchy. Feminism is something else and that phenomenon in which someone becomes witness of transformations of a woman. it is state of being regenerated from constructed formation of the society in which a criteria has been created since its origin!

Where are those people who have always had fear and denied their daughters to roam alone, to live alone, to accompany someone while going to party at night? The reason must have been this phenomenon and possibilities generally take place. It is due to some male characters who befriend girls as nice guys and molest them then. Ultra modern people have measured this people orthodox who have caring attitude for their daughters. Thus orthodoxy has become negative trait. Parents with caring nature are orthodox people but well educated spendthrifts, their extravagant ways and modern attire are free minded people who molest women. 

The film reminds people of their statements they generally have used to their daughters and it reminds every daughter of their parents’ saying: “ He can roam freely. He does or can do because he is a boy. You can’t you are a girl.”

Eventual resolution is containing a positive end and that is symbolized in Pink color ( The women color claiming justice and eradication of society's objectivity).Women demanding change with their Pink because wound and injustice have been inflicted on it. 

The film again shows perversion of aberrant people or it can be proclaimed mental terrorism of people along with their intolerance in male dominated society and thus it encounters women's act of claiming their rights unbearable. 

In film it happens when one of the three girls is advised to forget the whole matter and negotiate to settle issue by mutual understanding because it can only harm girls if the matter opens up and by that they can get exposed. That opinion decreases woman spirit.  Exact contradiction is shown when girls decide to negotiate the matter on phone and the girl communicating with main antagonist slaps him orally due to his obnoxious tone. She disconnecting the call by saying she has a problem with his aberrant predicament. These two incidents are connecting dots and show transformative feminist version.  If there is any normality of a woman, this is her normality and one can say a vertical line.  

The film is an attempt to transform the mindset of people. There is no newness in the story because we have many stories like this and what has been shown in the movie is current happenings of the society but ending outcome is inflicted as a slap on the face of so called patriarchy which is deconstructed apogee.

Drinking liquor does not make one a drunkard. Sleeping and getting intimated in sex does not make one characterless. Girls partying with male friends are not of loose characters and it does not mean they don’t belong to respected family. When a girl believes you her closest nutcase, she accompanies you or she does so because she finds you a good person. She shares her intimacy with you not her body. Even if she shares her intimacy it doesn’t mean she is giving you license to sleep with her.

Their clothes are their choice. They are their comfort zone. You change your perspective of seeing. Her body is her first possession. She carries it. She well understands it. She takes care of it. If it is not your comfort zone, she doesn’t become characterless. Her bodily spirit can never be measured and it is you who imposes wounds on it. It is your male ego and that wound decreases her individuality.

Pink is a critique of the society in which time does not bring change. Only person’s understanding can. Film is a critique of people’s looking towards women. It is day to day scenario and happenings which don’t have any positive future outcome and possibility of gender equality. Reality is everything goes in vein when someone efforts and raises voice but film has shown different moral reality which will take a long way to establish itself and if it does, nothing more will have been done for women. Just because our society defines two different moralities for man and woman, women’s partying and refreshments are blamed like she was drunk and if she is molested at that time, she is believed to be willingly absorbed in sex. If she has taken drink and was being molested then, she can’t demand self defense. Thus it is omen for women to be with guys because women belonging to respected families do not go to parties. Agony of every woman lies there where such morons disrespect other women by molesting them and become nice guys of family who respect their sisters and mothers.  Whom they molest are also girls with their dignity. Why does persona of a woman duffer so much den? Another agony is immaturity of society and it relates itself with accusation to women again. Instead of improving perverted mentality they say that it would not have happened if she had not been there. So normality for a woman is she should have certain restrictions on some places and she can’t roam freely anywhere.

Trust is a long time achievement and that is very well claimed by antagonist’s lawyer and so here it is proved right . Women haven’t mastered in it. They trust someone and that’s their fault. They should not and therefore it would be better for everyone if their company to someone will not be counted here as a fault of their character. It must be counted but as a matter of their carefulness to recognize intention of any moron. Such morons don’t ring the doorbell before attacking because they will never let a woman be aware of his evility.

Objectivity and subjectivity become important here because issue like gender discrimination has something to do with mindset of people. People believe what they see so it becomes clarity of neither subjectivity nor objectivity. Objectivity is belief in absence of biases and prejudices but law has become biased here and it itself is a conflict. People generally have bias with woman’s virginity and character. Even when people don’t have clarity regarding a woman’s actual persona, they assume her by her clothes, friends, job and other life events. If objectivity is claimed, people lack it and again aspect of objectivity is what people seeing but rare they are evaluating. Seeing can be different but discerning can’t be.    

The film stresses on ambiguous and political meaning of the word "normality" . This normality has been defined by some educated and well sophisticated mature morons. This normality is arranged tow sided! One prioritizes male normality and the other is woman normality but normality is what? What does it really mean? It means that place where man has privileges over women and this becomes "GENERAL NORMALITY" because it is running since ages. Man is powerful and woman is timid, not powerful, neither physically nor mentally. This is very well portrayed in the film and male characters can't even hesitate once to lie. They never take physical or mental pain but revenge colonizes their pride. On contrary women suffer mentally as well as physically. 

When a woman is sharing her smile, openness of thoughts, eccentricities, sheer laughter and accompaniment of a time period, she becomes an instrument to be used. It means one can make love with her and if she is talking with a male freely , she is interested in him or her frank behavior is symbol of her questionable character. People have set binary values in life and that is patriarchal binary. 

Issue of trust can be taken as an irony. Women instead of knowing this is male dominated society , they still believe there can be some exceptions and they embrace friendliness and that behavior is normal for some good guys who respect women . With the feeling of trust they accompany these good guys. For man this accompaniment is state of their freedom to do anything with women. 

Making love for women is not insistence or force. it may be her requirement but not that requirement which one calls physical hunger especially when she is bitterly forced to share bed! It is her love for her companion and her personal choice when she does so and if she denies, male ego is always hurt with the spirit of intolerance. Eventually it is for satisfaction of his male ego and to be free from accusation of molesting her. Any general rule for man has not been made yet but it is in the eye of every woman who knows "man will ultimately be man". Man has always attacked a woman's character and it happens with majority of male figures of the society who think of women only as their puppets and who satisfy their physical hunger. For them women are not individuals. They don't have their own freedom and their individuality. Many a times it is proved by male characters in the film when they turn outrageous to take revenge for letting the girls be shown their place. 

I take delight because film is mixture of morality and logic. It is whimsical when Mr. Sehgal is questioned and blamed for moralizing the issue and also requested to bring evidences. The film is genius critique to society for bringing up morality in favor of equality for women. Appeal is also made for understanding the woman appropriately. The country is becoming a terrific or blood red slang on the name of power and authority by whom the society is becoming more parted into two sides that contains man on one and women on the other. Nonetheless it is abrasive sword for trampling on justices and feeding on the powerless and less connected people.
