Piku !
Why did I like Piku?
> Simple manifestation, realistic version, candid manner far away from Bollywood romantic picturesque quality and presented in a quaint way.
> It completes in two hours. it doesn’t let audience get bored. sometimes it happens that the theme and the issue are one but story is presented in a very complex manner and things go on repeating but here hearts of viewers yell at cleansing of their feelings to let story include some more scenes and anecdotes.
> Dialogues and exchange of words do not grow in slow manner but they happen at once together and at the same time it seems so realistic like generally people have daily conversation in homely environment. Two or more characters speak up at one moment and another start telling when former has not ended yet.
> There are happy moments, grief stricken states, ambiguity, conflicts, confusions, blindness to drawbacks and laughter riots. There are happy and sad, tired and angry, crying and annoying broken mental predicaments associated with the health issue of constipation. Old man connects his realization and anecdotes of others’ life to his constipation. But the film is a charm with its lack of any exaggeration.
> An old man suffers from constipation. His character is depicted such a way that being viewers we link his predicaments, habits and qualities to our elders. A newly turned “old baby” with his eccentricities knocks our door of heart with inflammation in which we feel realism. Shoojit Sircar must have had first hand experience in sagacity of old people’s mental characteristics.
> An old man Bhaskarda is well aware that he is dependent and takes every pleasure freely in becoming dependent on his daughter Piku. However it is more pleasing when he claims that he is not dependent. It so happens when his daughter scolds him and he accuses her that she does not care about him. Some nature elements like Insecurity and realization of dependency complex are very well shown.
> Generally young members of family always feel ashamed of their elders and their behaviors because in old age they turn into so free and frank beings who do not pause to express themselves either it is their physical issue like constipation or mental disturbance like eccentricities. Bhaskarda does the same and with the portrayal of his character laughter riots take place and viewers burst out with laughter when daughter’s insistence to let the message of her father be read out in her office meeting exposes constipation details and everybody in office feels hesitated.
> The movie aims at showing the exact picture of old people and their nature in old age when they do not feel hesitated and want their children to listen to physical realities of their body as a newborn baby is taken care. Even they will give details precisely with exact time, numbers, and proper factual knowledge about the times they visit washroom, how long they have been there, how pathetic the process was, and what was the outcome. They will always detail.
> An old man’s version is not specification of the patient of constipation but it is generalization of an old man’s predicaments and understatements with whimsical way.
> Old people feel insecurity and they start sharing their personal things and want their children to understand them.
> Female protagonist is presented such a way that she seems authentic with her modesty, generosity and balanced nature she anyhow manages to maintain job and her father . sometimes feels irritation and gets annoyed turning out to be an eccentric too. She bursts out at people and yells being judged wrong by others.
> Movie turns out to be a familial diasporic study and archetypal image of feminist reading with the sense of belongingness and father-daughter relationship.
> An old man’s ideal notion of feminism takes place and it is portrayed being spoken many a times in the movie. He values women empowerment, education who does not let his daughter turn submissive to any man but tells to dominate her place by her identity. He also accuses his wife of her sacrifices she made and her benefaction. Perhaps Piku’s life and struggle spent in bringing her old father up makes her convinced of her independence in real sense after her father’s death. She accepts that her father has left a meaningful, dedicated and enthusiastic life to her in a large amount. That large amount is discernment, motion with emotion. At the end it is felt that the title is given suitably and it is also justified with the happy ending of Piku and her company with Rana. Motion stands for Piku’s care and generosity to live life and emotion stands for love for her father without biases which can be shown in her anger and scolding, caring and irritation, annoyance and frankness.
> Old people don’t care about their health in spite of being aware that they are ill and keep their conscious state in unconsciousness but their unconscious suppression lets them turn fearless and adventurous. It is well shown in the movie when Bhaskarda yearns for visiting Calcutta and whatever he does during the road trip. His cycling with ill health makes him so fulfilled with sprightly life and its liveliness. Second characteristic is old people’s sense of belongingness as Bhaskarda has for their Calcutta house. They always take pleasure in exploring old places.
> The end is portrayed so emphatically. Bhaskarda’s ecstasy is like rising action and his death is like climax. It expresses that sometimes it is so profuse for old people to let them live and allow them to do what they want. An old man’s constipation problem is also solved. We should behave such a way that they can keep their trust in their doing( under limitation; not beyond) so that their self confidence remains and they can get feeling of recognition. Old man dies and survives from constipation as he feels his own self satisfied, fulfilled at the very moment after having done what he desired. Doctors advise when our elders fall ill and suggest not to restrict them because there is no need for reports and check-ups and to let them live their life is our prime concern (as we know our old ones and they are aged now. They fall ill and it will take them sometime to get revived so it is better to let them live peacefully. Do not let them take burden that they are ill.) We find the same situations in our real life. Many a times we have seen that our elders have lived their last days peacefully and their death is happy one like Bhaskarda's death who does deny medicines, medical surgery or treatment. Bhaskarda must be knowing that these all would hurt him more so it is beautiful to see him living liveliness of his life. This realism has been portrayed appealingly.
> Coming to Irfaan Khan, I have always been fan of you. For me you are more than SRK, Khans, Kapoors and Kumars. His acting is like harmonious ocean, tuneful and pleasant sounding. He pours coherence in narrative with his excellence and slow time duration's patent acting. His facial expressions, dialogue delivery, tone along with physique were balanced and viewers will not find any embellishment. The way his concern grows mature for Piku leaves viewers more enthralled. His character is presented such a way that viewers again discover typical bollywood love-story aside which takes place at first sight love and with beautiful face. Here love is a process which is flourishing , thriving not in definite manner but with pauses and silences and understanding. He is like unknown who is never known but turns so considerate after having become acquainted with situations. He embraces it and tries to recognize it. After discerning, it turns out to be a beautiful feeling of being with each other.
> Amitji was, he has been, he will be a complete treasure. Deepika has done great job too.
