The Da Vinci Code film!

Art is to express!

  • Conflict in History!

Here, Art is to hide secret and it arouses conspiracy. Whether it conveys clearly or hides something. There must be the purpose of artist in showing it. It is also linked with history. It is either to be revealed or to be hidden. The painting becomes symbol of distortion of history. The hidden pictures within pictures give us symbol that neither history can be true nor it can be trusted! One has to explore it. The Da Vinci Code is supposed to be found. Langdon - the protagonist of the novel as well as movie seems confused and just like us, viewers! He has academic knowledge but the narrative challenges his knowledge to put that knowledge into practice or to question it. Here it is deconstructive  way of looking towards history. His own character and the way circumstances have been portrayed show the intended motif of history and appeals to apply subjectivity and objectivity.

  •   The very purpose of finding the truth!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             The purpose of all the characters is exploring, seeking the truth. But main conflict is: are they running for finding or hiding? Does it change the basic notion of history ,the way we know the things? Because we have been told the things as they are in history books or faith. Langdon finds symbols everywhere in the world. This way of perceiving is helpful but it also questions the subjective nature of reality and objectivity what we find before our eyes. This is what Langdon does and finds symbols before his eyes but believing according to own thoughts is subjectivity. Our mind is subjective and what comes before our eyes  is objective nature of reality. This notion leads to universal idea and symbology which goes with this notion too. This is what the movie tries to uncover! The film gives an outlet to deconsrtuct the basic notion of faith in religion. How religiously, our mind works! The film gives way to question it.

  •   Feminine Sacredness:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Where do women stand? The notion of  chastity, purity and what can be called " sacredness''? While giving the idea of purity , we have destroyed our logic and reason of our origin. We fail to question: How a man is born or given birth? It's a natural process. The very concept of sacredness is contrasted with the basic notion of origin. To give birth, one has to have physical relation but the idea of virginity is lost! The very thing in which the whole universe's origin lies, becomes minor to the idea of sacredness and virginity. It is the notion to transform the basic idea whether sacredness lies in absence of physical relation or it increases its worth of womanhood when she animates everything to give birth to a new life. The very idea of women's body is questioned. If it is not capable of giving birth it is blamed and abused. This wholeness of sacredness lies in women. Mary Magdalene's relations with Jesus Christ reminds of these ideas!
  •  Christianity or non- Christianity!
Does religion not have something to do with chastity? Religion doesn't deal with hindu or muslim or christian but it deals with the " whole idea of humanity ". Highly moral values are expected but they aren't followed. It is not non- christian movie or book because it uncovers blindness, blind devotion in name of religion. "What is religion" has always been lost! The movie speaks of the greed of Opus Dei, Aringarosa and his interest in material things, having been bent on believing in traditional views with his luxurious life and trappings. While watching movie, we feel that Opus Dei is not absorbed in spirituality. Some characters show blind adherence to religion in book as well as in movie and  make it visible to us: how to look at religion! It is not  non- christian movie or book but rather it reveals truth about how to look at religion. It gives moral message to deconstruct the very idea of our faith.

  •    Bible is challenged!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      History can only be written by the person who has lived the time and felt the time without biases. Bible  had been written before many years and the writer always intentionally or unintentionally expresses his own views in either real stories or histories! I would consider Da Vinci Code as " can be trustworthy" because the things are shown with proofs and it gives subverting way to look at the things. It is a spiritual journey.

  •    The difference between viewing movie and reading novel!                                                                                                                                                                          This task is basically to understand : Does while reading novel what we create " a word picture " before our eyes have similarity with visual form while watching movie? Reading gives free imagination whereas watching restricts because there is visibility. This novel challenges to overcome our illusion what we are eyeing is illusion. Amalgamation of cryptology and symbology  have intentionally been used to prove the point. It is the conflict between truth and fact. Truth is truth. No one can deny or destroy it but faith can be wrong. This is what happens in the movie when Jesus Christ's affair with Mary Magdalene is revealed! Truth is also complicated here because it should be revealed through symbols, something which is not visible. You have to explore it!

  • The difference between movie and novel!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   In movie, Langdon delivers his speech on symbols. In novel, he is in the hotel. Threat, astonishment and surprising feelings are there in the movie just because two things happen together. Lecture of Langdon and an investigator who wants to meet him. In the very beginning, Langdon's speech of symbology is very meaningful. It works like foreshadowing that activity of seeking enigmatic symbols in paintings will be going on in the movie! This quote makes a difference indeed: " As the saying goes, a picture says  thousand words ". The picture remains alive, words disappear. Symbols are supposed to be found in hidden art. Symbology is given space in movie very well. To discern the world, visibility of symbology is very important!
  • Symbols in movie!                                                                                                                            During lecture some symbols are displayed and explained by Landon which can be interpreted as foreshadowing.
  • Poseiden: God of the sea ( further in movie Holy Grail of Jesus Christ ( god)
  • Trident : Symbol of power ( further in movie Opus Dei- an organization of Christianity.)
  • Medonna and child: ( Mary Magdalene's or Jesus's bloodline to Sophie)                                                              Blind faith in religion already takes place in form of not exact foreshadowing but it gives future prediction that people will have to seek such kinds of symbols in upcoming moments! It is quest, the way Langdon goes on lecturing was about history either personally or culturally. While narrating our time or anecdotes, we define our own self. So it is a major question to history. History embodies person and his thoughts so it questions: how history which has survived very long can be original truth? There can be distortion.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Religion makes a follower " programmed robot ". Silas is one example and how religion murders people. Blindness in religion is shown through Silas. " I chastise my body "- says Silas! People can see but it plays blind man's buff!
  • Vitruvian man's symbol and its painting indicates co-relation of ideal human proportions.
  • Venus: The symbol of female organism.
  • Monalisa: It not only reminds of balance between feminine and the masculine but harmony and intimacy or unity of male female to live the world. If we look at all, the symbols which have been portrayed in movie have a lot to do with womanhood and man- women equality  and faith in religion! "The horizon is significantly lower on the left than it is on the right". It shows differences regarding women! Monalisa's painting is enigmatic.
  • The conversation between Langdon and sophie is noteworthy. They talk about believing and deception or hidden agenda of painters.
  • The fluer-de-lis is a cross with flower symbol of pagan which believed in equality of male-female!
Priory of Sion: It is an emblem which protects source of god's power on earth. Sophie tries to remember her talks with her grandfather.

Sophie belongs to Jesus bloodline shows relationship between past and its history. All symbols convey a single message regarding basic roots of culture which are to live in harmony. No myth exists in totality but it is born with human existence. While the conversation Langdon says,   "nobody hates history but they hate their own history''. It means there are some things lying in our past and we hate them. When we narrate them, there will be our own perspective.

  •  The Da Vinci painting and conversation between Sophie and Langdon!                                                                                                                                                          The basic question is what is the hidden secret of church and how Da Vinci has coded in last supper. It can be seen while watching movie that Jesus was man- an extra ordinary not god! But he was a man with vitality. I would interpret this as what has been conveyed in the movie and it is about the source of power and energy on earth in form of Jesus! Jesus has left his marks and Sophie is one of those glimpses. Spirituality and religion lies in harmony and unity of male-female! Langdon throws light on his profession of symbology that paintings which are made to hide some symbols and those symbols are used by people according to their own perspectives! Why do people write history because there is something worth in past to be understood. Past always associates with person and becomes an experience and that experience turns out to be history. When history is restricted, it hides something and it needs to be revealed. At first extent Sophie doesn't believe in Holy Grail and story of Jesus and Mary Magdalene but reality is revealed and she herself belongs to that royal bloodline! Another truth that is revealed is Jesus decided to uniform Rom under single religion and Christianity. It is known as Nicaea. Many sects  of Christianity and how they are debated or voted is revealed. Truth is what followed by majority and also believed by majority.  Some Christians believed he was divine and it came from his divinity and moral sense which made him god.
 Conflict between cryptology and symbology!
Langdon: A symbologist, a catholic knows myth, history but when history is revealed, it makes him question his knowledge!
Sophie: Less believing. But neither of the two is true! It is a semantic problem in discussion of Jesus Christ and Holy Grail.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Holy Grail

It wasn't last supper but it was a tomb of Mary Magdalene! It shows womanhood. Tomb of woman can be taken as her sacredness or if we look from virginity it is not so. It is a literally symbol of womanhood! Pagan believes in equality of man and woman but this idea is removed from Christianity. A woman carries secret is so powerful and if it is revealed, it would devastate the very foundation of Christianity which never considered women as equal as man! Sophie claims that they are all man. Teabing says that Mary is Jesus's disciple and his wife too. It was Jesus who was having physical relations with Mary. This claims that he must have been a human being . He can't be divine. To produce another life, two body are supposed to meet. If he were divine, he would have produced baby by spiritual vibrations from nature elements. It would have autonomously animated Jesus to produce new life but this anecdote of Jesus and Mary proves that he must have been human not divine. It also shows that human perhaps can have that ability to be divine by performing his deeds and can spread positive vibrations through his divinity! It was not last supper but a womb, female womb. In paganism women were worshiped and believed a way to heaven. They need to survive for existence of this universe! This is in case of Jesus Christ and the child Sophie. But in Christianity church plays a vital role. It is key to heaven and church rules the world which considered women as threat! Perhaps Mary Magdalene was considered an opposite figure and as a free thinking woman and free thinking woman in context of society , church or institution is satanic and can't be accepted! Too many women were killed during that time!

The characters in movie are in search of truth of Holy Grail in the process of either protecting truth or finding truth. Cryptex and map in cryptic language create confusions! People are killed who try to find truth. Killer like Silas doesn't know the truth. He is devotee of Jesus Christ but a blind devotee who gives himself bodily pain. So on the path of religion, wrong goes on happening! The person who lives with compassion and love is divine and human beings have the ability to be divine or to create another life must be considered  a divine because divinity lies in goodness and moral values of a human being as it is discussed by Teabing, Langdon and Sophie about the character of Jesus. Holy Grail and Feminine sacredness involves many issues like  spirituality v/s religion, social divisions, moral corruption and religion, and womanhood in religion. The movie directly through the portrayal of characters and symbols shows how history operates in conditioning of state of mind. The movie Da Vinci Code seems to rationalize everything with scientific approach and institution. Faith is like when you start using and recurring word in particular context , it starts getting meaning!

The scene of Pagan ritual sex!

This scene deconstructs the idea of feminine sacredness and shows male female cosmic energy to the origin of world! If the very thing of spirituality takes place anywhere it lies here.

Sophie's comparison with Ophelia in Hamlet movie, Elizabeth in Frenkenstein movie and Hester Prynne in Scarlet Letter movie!

Ophelia is mistreated by Hamlet, misused by her father Polonious. She rather seems victim in hands of her loved ones not destiny.  Elizabeth has to be killed by the monster due to her lover's strange creation and desire of knowledge. Ophelia and Elizabeth meet their doom because of their loved ones. But if we see Sophi's character she embodies conflicts. She seems powerful but she has to bow down to Langdon (not begging) but without his help she would not have succeed in finding the truth. In spite of having power or intellect she is provided some explanations by Langdon. If we see these things from another perspective it also gives a way to think of strength of unity. In one or another way they both attempt to reach the truth! It can be seen in the center where their meet brings the conclusion! Hester falls under the category of "alienated or banished woman" as society excludes her. But her strength and love challenge puritan culture and values and hypocrisy of puritanism. Puritanism strongly believes in church and its moral values. Hester Prynne was the one who questions while being entitled  "an adulterate "! Hester Prynne plays a vital role in questioning puritan religion while here Sophie comes to know about her bloodline and subverting way towards religion can be seen in demand! Both the women through her intellect and life challenge the very nature of religion.  If we compare Hester and Sophie's character , they are power personified and passionate women who challenge the institution! Their existence transforms the concept of womanhood. Sophie belongs to Jesus Christ ! Being an intellectual woman or endowed with cryptology he has to gain help! It changes the notion of Christianity which never considered women as equal as man! Both  the culture Christian and puritan had same ideas regarding women!
